SKR-03-324 Saturn

science:

This is the sound of the aurora on Saturn. Pretty eerie, no?

There is no sound in space. Outside planets and stars, molecules are spread out too thin for sound to propagate. It follows, then, that we can’t really hear sounds planets emit into space. But radio waves—electromagnetic waves with wavelengths longer than infrared light—are, as we know, handy for representing sound. And so it makes sense for us to interpret radio waves, whether originally encoding sound or not, as sound. These are radio waves emitted in conjunction with auroras around Saturn’s poles, similar to the northern and southern lights on Earth. They were picked up by the Cassini spacecraft and then interpreted as sound. But the sound was not in the audible range, so it has been downshifted by a factor of 44. And finally, so as not to bore us to death, it has been speeded up by a factor of 22. Realize, then, that many human choices were made in order for us to be able to “listen to space.” But if you can accept that, you can enjoy this.

meme time!

i found a pretty decent original story character meme, don’t know how far or often i’ll do it, but it looks helpful so here we go!

Day 1 - A main protagonist, their bio.

Johnny Cross!

Johnny has lived in the small seaside town of Ophir, Oregon his entire life. He has two older siblings, Nadia and Aidan, who are twins, and a mother and father. They all live together in a rather run down two story red house at the end of a street no one bothers going down anymore.

Growing up, Johnny had an okay life. In Ophir, all school grades up through high school attended the same small building, Ophir School. Johnny didn’t have any good friends, but he had people to talk to and that was good enough. He loved solitude more than anything.

He took up star gazing pretty early on in life, took an extreme interest in it. He got a job at a local kite shop at 13 just to earn money to buy books about constellations and a telescope. Every clear night to this day he lays out in the tall grass by the beach and reads the stars. He has books and charts full of notes, but now he knows it all by heart. After a horrific time in his life (which I will touch on soon) he finds pleasure in the feeling of insignificance he gets when looking out into space (partly the reason the story is named what it is!)

I won’t get into super detail for this part because it’s very spoilery, but the jist of why everyone in town calls Johnny a murderer is because he was found on an empty stretch of highway at night with his best friend’s dead body. His best friend also happened to be his brother Aidan’s girlfriend, so from that point on he was rejected completely by his entire family. Although he still lives with them, they no longer acknowledge him past the point of making him do things for them (make dinner, do chores, etc). So he spends as much time out of the house as possible, trying to find a place of solitude, which he has always found in the stars. It took him a while to stop letting people phase him when they all whispered about him while he was in the room, shouted ‘murderer!’ at him, screamed and hid from him, denied him service, among other hurtful things, but thinking about how insignificant his life is compared to the vastness of space helped him through that time.

(side note: no charges were put against Johnny because, as the circumstances had it, there were no witnesses or concrete proof that he did in fact murder the girl)

By the time Johnny meets Cole, he is 17, he’s about to start his senior year of high school, and he is a shell of a person. Cole slowly but surely breaks him out of that shell. Johnny finds Cole extremely fascinating because he’s the first person that, after he’s heard the story from both sides, believes that Johnny is innocent. The first few times they meet are under very strange circumstances, but after Johnny realizes that Cole isn’t about to leave him alone, he reluctantly lets him into his life.

I’d also like to note that Johnny has known he was gay since pretty early on, but has kept himself closeted since Ophir is a pretty right wing town, and once everyone began hating him he felt no desire to anger them further with his “abnormalities”. I’ll touch more on this with the next prompt!

etsuo miller everybody
  • Ets: Does it ever bother you that you have the same initials as Jesus Christ?
  • Johnny: Uh...I never thought about it.
  • Ets: Is it going to bother you now?
  • Johnny: ...I'm gonna say 'yes'.
  • Ets: Then my work here is done.

nature

“I can’t remember a particular moment when I began loving every part of him, y’know, all his in-betweens and everything. I think maybe it was just all the moments all along. I never started and I never stopped. It’s just…nature. That’s how I think nature works, anyway.”
